Uniting Together“Our Family & Friends Support Group began over two years ago with the goal of eventually having a strong support group for each other. We are a diverse group of parents, guardians, friends, and family members who are all there for one purpose . . . to help our loved ones have a more meaningful, successful, and happy life. As the group grows, we hope to develop connections with each other where we feel comfortable calling upon each other when we have concerns, questions, and or just need a hug or some encouraging words. Please feel free to contact me at anytime if you have questions about the group, or need someone to talk with about your loved one’s situation. By uniting together as a group we can help make Community Link an outstanding organization.” Rita Winkeler No membership dues or meeting fees are required to participate in the Family & Friends Support Group, which meets quarterly. The Family & Friends Support group met Monday evening, December 12th, with guest speaker Krescene Beck, New Visions Trainer / Full Life Futures Planning Coach. Krescene informed the group of how they can really listen to what their son, daughter, brother, sister or friend with a disability wants through our ears, eyes and heart. Dreams are about what the individual wants to do and not about what their supporters think is best for them. She gave several examples of dreams from self advocates she has come to know from various areas of daily life including learning, health, transportation, playing, and work. Krescene has trained Community Link staff to lead program participants through “Dreams” classes in which they will discuss and define some of their dreams and how to begin the process of achieving them. |
